Gavaskar’s Perspective on Asian Cricket Council’s Future
Asian Cricket Council Faces Uncertainty
Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian cricketer, expressed his concerns about the Asian Cricket Council’s future following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, which led to the death of 26 innocent civilians. According to Gavaskar, Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming Asia Cup, to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka, seems unlikely.
Gavaskar’s Asia Cup Predictions
In an interview with Sports Today, Gavaskar mentioned that the BCCI has always adhered to the Indian government’s instructions. Therefore, he doesn’t anticipate any changes in their stance regarding the Asia Cup. Since India and Sri Lanka are the hosts for this Asia Cup edition, it depends on whether the situation has improved. However, if it hasn’t, Gavaskar can’t see Pakistan participating in the Asia Cup.
Asian Cricket Council’s Possible Disbandment
Gavaskar also discussed the possibility of the Asian Cricket Council being disbanded. He proposed that there could be a three-nation tour or tournament, or a four-nation tournament with Hong Kong or UAE being invited. The decision, he believes, relies on what happens in the next couple of months.
India’s Potential 4 or 5 Nation Tournament
The former Indian opener also hinted at the possibility of a 4 or 5 nation tournament hosted by India. He suggested that India might decide to withdraw from the Asian Cricket Council and host a tournament with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and possibly another team. If the tournament is held in Bangladesh or Sri Lanka, but India is the host, then India will host it in India.
