Supreme Court Refuses Petition on Assam’s Foreigner Issue

The Supreme Court refused to hear a petition. This petition was against the Assam government’s action. They were pushing back to Bangladesh persons declared foreigners by Foreigners Tribunals. A bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and SC Sharma asked the petitioner to go to Gauhati High Court.

Background of the Petition

The petition claimed something serious. It said the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Assam was pushing Indian citizens to Bangladesh. They were doing this without following due process. They were using the excuse of deporting undocumented migrants.

Recent Surge in Detentions

This petition came after a surge in detentions. These detentions were of declared foreigners in Assam since May 23. Families say they have no information on their relatives’ whereabouts. Some have identified their missing relatives in videos from Bangladesh. They say their relatives were forcibly sent across the border. Read on.

Landslide in Sikkim Kills Three Army Personnel

A landslide struck an army camp in the Chatten area of North Sikkim on Sunday night. Three Indian Army personnel were killed. Six others are missing.

Heavy Rainfall Triggers Landslide

Heavy rainfall began around 7 pm near Lachen town in Mangan district. This triggered the landslide. Four personnel who were injured have been rescued. A search operation is underway for the six missing personnel.

Tourists Rescued in Sikkim

Over 100 tourists were stranded due to landslides since May 30. They have been rescued and taken to Phidang in the Lower Dzongu area in north Sikkim.

Heavy Rains in the North East

Other parts of the North East have also reported heavy rains in the past two days. Assam’s Silchar district recorded 415.8 mm of rainfall over a 24-hour period on Sunday. This is the highest single-day rainfall since 1893.

Floods in Manipur

In Manipur, more than 19,000 residents have been hit by floods. This happened after four consecutive days of downpour. The rains have damaged as many as 3,365 houses. Read on.

Kamal Haasan’s Film Makers Move Karnataka High Court

The makers of the Tamil film Thug Life have moved the Karnataka High Court. This film stars actor and politician Kamal Haasan. They seek directions to ensure the film can be screened in the state. There have been calls for boycotting it.

Petition Details

The petition by production house Raajkamal Films International made a point. They said Haasan’s comment that Kannada was “born out of Tamil” was taken out of context. They said it was made in the spirit of camaraderie.

Film Chamber’s Warning

The petitioners asked the court to stop the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce from blocking the film’s screening. The film chamber had warned that the release of Thug Life would be blocked. They wanted Haasan to issue a formal apology for his remark. Read on.

RSS Leader Booked for Inflammatory Speech

The Karnataka police have booked Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader Kallada Prabhakar Bhat. They did this for allegedly making inflammatory remarks at a condolence meet in the Dakshina Kannada district.

Details of the Incident

The alleged remarks were made on May 12 in Kavalapadur village in Bantwal. This was during a memorial for Bajrang Dal member Suhas Shetty. Shetty was also accused of murder. He was reportedly killed within Mangaluru city limits on May 1.

Police Action

Bhat was addressing a crowd of around 500 people in Dakshina Kannada. He made remarks that could disturb communal harmony, the police said. The Bantwal Rural Police have registered a case against Bhat. This is for statements conducing to public mischief under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Read on.
