Medical Association Urges Chief Minister to Act

Roll back fee hike for medical courses: IMA

Ahmedabad: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has reached out to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. They have requested a reversal of the recent fee increase for government and self-financed medical courses. The IMA is concerned that this hike could prevent talented students from pursuing their medical education.

Why the Fee Increase is a Concern

The IMA’s letter highlights several key points:

  • The fee for government and management quotas has risen by 10% to 12%.
  • This increase is causing worry among parents and students alike.

The IMA has asked for the hike to be revoked immediately. They believe this would be a beneficial step for both students and the medical community.

Understanding the Fee Adjustments

Last year, the fee regulatory committee set the fees for self-financed institutions. This is typically done every three years. However, due to post-Covid adjustments, fees were set for just one year. The committee planned to review college financial records before setting fees for the next two years.

Now, the committee has announced an average fee increase of 12%. They cite inflation and financial assessments as the reasons for this rise.

How This Affects Students and Their Families

The committee argues that the increase is necessary. They say it’s crucial for keeping self-financed colleges running. However, the IMA disagrees. In their letter, signed by IMA Gujarat president Dr. Mehul Shah and secretary Dr. Gargi Patel, they express concern that this significant yearly fee rise will put financial strain on students and their families.
