New Travel Rules Announced

President Trump has set new travel rules. These rules affect people from 19 countries. The aim is to keep the country safe.

Countries on the List

People from these countries cannot enter the US:

  • Afghanistan
  • Myanmar
  • Chad
  • Republic of Congo
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Eritrea
  • Haiti
  • Iran
  • Libya
  • Somalia
  • Sudan
  • Yemen

People from these countries face stricter rules:

  • Burundi
  • Cuba
  • Laos
  • Sierra Leone
  • Togo
  • Turkmenistan
  • Venezuela

Why These Rules?

President Trump wants to make immigration rules stricter. This includes sending back people from Venezuela who may be in gangs. It also means stopping some foreign students from studying in the US.

Trump says the rules depend on how big the threat is. The list can change. More countries could be added if needed.

A recent attack in Colorado is linked to these new rules. The attacker was from Egypt and stayed in the US too long. But Egypt is not on the list.

What the White House Says

The White House says some countries on the list do not check people well enough. Others have misused the US visa system. Some also do not take back people who are sent out of the US.

Trump says, “We don’t want them.” He thinks his rules stopped big attacks during his first term.

History of the Travel Rules

Trump made similar rules in 2017. These rules changed a few times. The Supreme Court agreed with them in 2018. People called it a “Muslim ban” because most countries on the list were Muslim. Later, North Korea and Venezuela were added.

President Biden stopped these rules in 2021. He said they were a “stain on our national conscience.”

How Countries Were Chosen

The Department of Homeland Security looked at many things. These include terrorists in the country, not working well with the US on visa safety, and people staying in the US too long.

White House Spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said, “President Trump is keeping his promise to protect Americans from dangerous people from other countries.”

Who Can Still Travel?

Some people can still travel. These include:

  • Sports players going to big events
  • Afghans with special visas
  • People who live in the US permanently
  • People with visas because they are treated badly in Iran
  • People with citizenship in countries not on the list

The US Secretary of State can also let some people travel if it helps the country.
