India’s Security and Foreign Policy: Congress Calls for Debate

India's Security and Foreign Policy

The Congress party wants Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hold a full debate during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. They aim to discuss India’s security and foreign policy challenges, especially after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.

Monsoon Session of Parliament: Key Details

The Monsoon Session of Parliament will run from July 21 to August 12.

Opposition’s Request for Special Session

Before the session dates were set, the Opposition asked for a special session. They wanted to talk about several important issues:

  • The Pahalgam terror attack
  • Operation Sindoor
  • The results of the four-day India-Pakistan conflict last month

Congress’ Demand for Discussion

The Congress made this demand after Modi met with members of Indian delegations. These delegations included former diplomats and MPs. They had visited 32 countries to share India’s stance on cross-border terrorism from Pakistan.

India’s Diplomatic Efforts

After the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, India reached out to other countries. Operation Sindoor targeted what India claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Building Consensus on National Strategy

Jairam Ramesh asked the prime minister to meet with leaders of all political parties. The goal is to agree on India’s strategy regarding China and Pakistan. This is crucial after recent comments by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan in Singapore.

General Anil Chauhan’s Statements

Ramesh mentioned Chauhan’s comments to Bloomberg. Some saw these comments as admitting that the Indian Air Force lost aircraft during Operation Sindoor. Chauhan said, “What matters is not the jet being down, but why they were down. Why they were down, what mistakes were made – that is important. Numbers are not important.”

Seeking Justice for Pahalgam Attack

Ramesh also asked the government to step up efforts to bring the Pahalgam attack terrorists to justice.

Proposal for Expert Committee

The Congress leader suggested creating a high-level expert committee. This committee would be like the Kargil Review Committee led by K Subrahmanyam. It would review Operation Sindoor and look into the future of warfare, new military technologies, and national strategic communication.

Now that the PM has met with members of the seven Parliamentary delegations sent to 32 countries, will he at least now –

1. Chair a meeting with leaders of all political parties and share India’s future strategy…
