Delhi University Launches Course on Navigating Relationships

Delhi University Course on Relationships

Delhi University has started a new course. It’s called “Navigating Intimate Relationships.” This course helps students deal with emotional challenges. It also teaches them to spot red flags. Students will learn about friendships and romantic relationships. This is very useful in today’s world of dating apps and social media.

The Department of Psychology offers this course. It is open to all undergraduate students. The course starts from the 2023-26 academic year. The university wants to build emotional strength and intelligence. This is because there are rising concerns about emotional distress and violence in toxic relationships.

About the Course: Navigating Intimate Relationships

This course guides students through modern relationship complexities. It covers topics like relationships, romance, friendships, and breakups. These topics are often ignored in traditional education. Students who have cleared their Class 12 examinations can enroll.

Course Structure

The course is worth four credits. It includes three lectures and one tutorial each week. Tutorials have engaging activities such as:

  • Movie reviews
  • Debates on dating culture
  • Group discussions
  • Social media network analysis

This course provides a safe space. Students can discuss relationships openly here.

Key Units

  • Transitioning from friends to partners
  • Maintaining long-term connections
  • Understanding friendships and relationships
  • Examining emotional attachment and sexuality
  • Understanding love through key theories
  • Recognizing signs of trouble in relationships
  • Building strong connections through communication and empathy

Why Students Need This Course

The university introduced this course due to rising concerns. These concerns are about emotional distress and violence in toxic relationships among youth. The goal is to foster emotional awareness and resilience. This is done through structured academic engagement.

The course is interactive and engaging. For example, students will analyze films like Kabir Singh and Titanic. They will explore themes of toxic masculinity and idealized romance. However, it does not offer any practical components.

Latika Gupta, a DU faculty member, said, “Movies often glamorize toxic love. In a classroom, they become opportunities to discuss harmful norms. We need to start conversations on emotional health early. This is to prevent future harm.”
