RBI Governor’s Journey: Lessons on Change and Growth

Sanjay Malhotra’s Inspiring Story

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra

In Lucknow, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra shared his life experiences. He talked about his time at the United Nations. There, he learned to challenge the way things are. This lesson helped him make government systems better during his career.

Important Lessons from Malhotra’s Career

At the 58th convocation of IIT Kanpur, Malhotra shared four key lessons:

  • Never stop learning
  • Always question how things are done
  • Do your duties without fear
  • Build trust with others

The Importance of Asking Questions

Malhotra quoted Albert Einstein. He told students to always keep questioning. “When you question the status quo, you open doors to new ideas,” he said. “It leads to innovation. It pushes you to explore and create better things. So, never stop questioning and improving, no matter where you are in life or your career.”

Making Big Changes

From 2003 to 2006, Malhotra worked at the UN. He was part of a project to improve productivity in India’s hand tool manufacturing clusters. He saw how small changes could lead to big improvements.

A quality management expert suggested reducing the time to change a die from eight hours to less than one. People were skeptical at first. But a simple video of the process helped find problems. These included late starts, unplanned breaks, and lack of preparation.

Using Lessons in Different Jobs

Malhotra used this mindset in his roles in taxation, power, banking, and finance. “It helped in changing laws, rules, and procedures,” he said. “These changes helped both citizens and the government.”
