Government Says No to Toll Charges on Two-Wheelers

Recent media reports suggested that two-wheelers might soon face toll taxes. The government has now dismissed these claims. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) made it clear that no such plan is in the works.

NHAI’s Clear Statement

NHAI took to X to set the record straight:

“Some media reports say the Government of India plans to charge user fees on two-wheelers. NHAI would like to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration. There are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers.”

Minister’s Reassurance

Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport & Highways, also addressed these reports. He stated, “No such decision has been proposed.”

He further added:

“The exemption on toll for two-wheeler vehicles will continue fully.”

Current Rules and Recent Updates

These statements come after several reports claimed that the government would start charging user fees on two-wheelers. Right now, two-wheelers do not have to pay any toll charges.

These reports started after the government announced a new FASTag Annual Pass last week. The FASTag Annual Pass is a prepaid toll scheme. It will start on August 15. This scheme aims to make travel easier for private car owners and frequent highway users.

Advantages of the FASTag Annual Pass

  • Allows up to 200 toll-free trips
  • Provides unlimited access to national highways and expressways for one year
  • Fixed cost of Rs 3,000

Union Minister Gadkari called this scheme a big step. It aims to make highway travel more affordable and quicker, especially for middle-class families. The plan, which works with existing FASTags, is expected to reduce traffic at toll plazas. It also encourages smooth digital transactions.
