Delhi Government Takes Action Against AAP Leaders for Hospital Construction Issues
What Happened?
The Delhi government’s Anti-Corruption Branch has filed a case against two AAP leaders, Saurabh Bharadwaj and Satyendar Jain. They are accused of wrongdoing in the building of 24 hospitals.
A Complaint Was Made
A member of the BJP, Vijender Gupta, complained in August. He said that Bharadwaj and Jain had messed with project budgets, misused public money, and worked with private builders in a wrong way.
Hospital Projects Faced Problems
In 2018-2019, the AAP government in Delhi approved 24 hospital projects. These projects were worth Rs 5,590 crore. But they faced delays and cost a lot more than planned.
- None of the projects were finished on time.
- Some projects were for building new hospitals, while others were for improving existing ones.
What Went Wrong?
The Anti-Corruption Branch found several issues:
- One hospital project, worth Rs 1,125 crore, was supposed to be done in six months. But after nearly three years and spending Rs 800 crore, it’s still only half-finished.
- Some hospitals had buildings that were not approved.
- Another hospital project’s cost went up from Rs 488 crore to Rs 1,135 crore, and it’s still not done. It was supposed to be finished by January 2023.
- A project to build 94 clinics faced big problems. Only 52 clinics were built, and the cost went up from Rs 168 crore to Rs 220 crore. Many of these clinics don’t work.
- A system to manage health information, announced in 2016-2017, hasn’t been put in place yet.
