Farmer Leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s Meeting with Union Minister Amidst Fast-Unto-Death
Dallewal’s Hunger Strike and Discussions with Union Agriculture Minister
Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a 70-year-old farmer-activist from Punjab, arrived in an ambulance for a meeting with Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Dallewal, who suffers from cancer, has been on a fast-unto-death for months at the Khanauri border point between Punjab and Haryana. He is demanding that the Centre accept the agitating farmers’ requests, including a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops.
Third Meeting in Over a Month
- This meeting is the third round of discussions in just over a month.
- The primary focus of these talks is the demand for a legal guarantee of MSP, ensuring a 50% profit over the comprehensive cost (C2) for farmers.
Discussions on MSP Funding
The discussions are expected to revolve around a document provided by farm forums to officials. This document details the quantum of money required for MSP, with information sourced from various organizations such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Credit Rating Information Services of India Limited (Crisil), and the Reserve Bank.
