Crucial Lifestyle Changes to Combat Rising Diabetes in India

RSSDI Stresses Importance of Healthy Living

The Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) has underlined the growing prevalence of diabetes in India and emphasized the necessity of lifestyle modifications to control this condition. At a press conference in Ranchi, the organization announced its 4th annual conference, set to begin on Saturday for two days.

Diabetes Rates in Urban and Rural Areas

  • Urban areas show a 15% diabetes rate
  • Rural areas exhibit a 10% prevalence

Experts at the event suggested simple exercises, such as push-ups, to maintain overall health. They also highlighted the advantages of incorporating nuts and millets like bajra and wheat alternatives into daily meals.

Dietary and Lifestyle Habits

According to RSSDI national executive member, N K Singh, adopting the right dietary and lifestyle practices can enable individuals to manage diabetes without medication for up to 10 years. Refined flour-based foods lead to a sudden increase in blood sugar, while millets help maintain stable glucose levels and prevent sudden peaks.

Lack of Awareness and Complications

Singh noted that a significant factor contributing to the increasing diabetes burden is a lack of awareness. He clarified that diabetes is not only about high blood sugar but is also associated with severe complications such as brain stroke, eye damage, heart failure, kidney failure, and digestive issues like constipation. Regular health check-ups, including lipid profile monitoring, are vital for early risk detection.
