Boeing Cuts Jobs: 150-180 Employees Laid Off in India
Global Restructuring Affects Boeing India Engineering Technology Center
NEW DELHI: Boeing, the leading American aerospace company, has let go of 150-180 employees at its Boeing India Engineering Technology Center (BIETC) in Bengaluru. This is a part of the company’s worldwide downsizing strategy. Dr. Brendan Nelson, Senior VP & President of Boeing Global, confirmed this news to TOI.
Effect on Boeing India Engineering Technology Center
- Out of the 7,000 Boeing employees in India, nearly 6,500 work at BIETC in Bengaluru and Chennai.
- These centers handle intricate advanced aerospace tasks and contribute to Boeing’s global engineering growth.
- Boeing’s fully-owned engineering and technology campus in Bengaluru, one of the company’s biggest investments outside the US, started operations in January 2024.
Global Workforce Reduction
Dr. Nelson stated that the company is “right-sizing” and plans to decrease its total workforce to 162,000. Around 15% of this workforce is based outside the United States, with more than a quarter of those employees located in India.
- India hosts the largest number of Boeing employees outside the US, with a total of 7,000.
- Considering direct employees and supply chain partners, the total employee count in India reaches 14,000.
Reasons for Downsizing
The company has reduced its workforce by 10%, leading to the loss of approximately 17,000 jobs across the organization. This decision was made to align the company’s size with the financial and economic challenges it is facing.
India’s Role in Boeing’s Recovery Plans
Boeing views India as vital to its recovery plans and intends to increase sourcing from the country as aircraft production increases. Kelly Ortberg, Boeing’s president & CEO, has established priorities for the company, including delivery execution, stabilizing the balance sheet and production lines, and focusing on the future while maintaining safety.
