Freedom of Expression vs Attack: Yogi Adityanath on Kunal Kamra Row

UP CM’s Take on the Controversy

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has shared his views on the ongoing controversy involving stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra. He emphasized that freedom of expression should not be misused to attack others.

Freedom of Speech: Birthright or Misuse?

  • Adityanath expressed concern over some individuals misusing freedom of speech to divide the country and deepen divisions.
  • He stated, “The freedom of expression cannot be used to attack. It is unfortunate that some people considered the freedom of speech as their birthright to divide the country and further deepen divisions.”

Eknath Shinde’s Reaction

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also reacted strongly to Kamra’s recent joke, stating that there should be a limit to free speech.

Shinde on Limits of Free Speech

  • Shinde said, “Freedom of speech is there. We understand satire. But there should be a limit.”
  • He compared Kamra’s actions to taking a ‘supari’ (contract) to speak against someone.

Vandalism of Habitat Studio

Addressing the vandalism of Habitat Studio by Shiv Sena workers, Shinde remarked, “The other person should also maintain a certain level, otherwise, action causes reaction.”

Kamra’s Previous Targets

  • Shinde alleged that Kamra had previously targeted the Supreme Court, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, journalist Arnab Goswami, and industrialists.
  • He added, “This is not freedom of speech; this is working for someone.”

Parody of Dil Toh Pagal Hai Song

The controversy erupted after Kamra parodied a song from Dil Toh Pagal Hai, calling Eknath Shinde a ‘gaddar’ (traitor) during a recent show.

Kamra’s Refusal to Apologize

  • Despite the backlash and protests by Shinde-led Shiv Sena workers, Kamra refused to apologize.
  • He declared, “I will not apologize,” targeting “the mob and politicians.”

Freedom of Speech and Expression

Kamra emphasized that the right to freedom of speech and expression is not only to be used to fawn over the powerful and rich.
