Devastation in Myanmar and Thailand
A strong earthquake hit Myanmar, causing over 1,000 deaths and injuring around 2,400 people, as reported by the military government.

- The earthquake occurred near Mandalay city on Friday morning.
- Mandalay is Myanmar’s second-most populous city.
- The quake had a magnitude of 7.5, according to India’s National Center for Seismology.
- A 7.0 magnitude aftershock followed soon after.
- Both quakes were shallow, with a depth of 10 km, leading to more destruction.
Impact and Losses
In Mandalay, the earthquake damaged parts of the former royal palace and other buildings.
The junta declared an emergency in six regions and states, including Mandalay and the capital Naypyitaw.
Thailand also suffered, with at least 10 deaths and 16 injuries reported in Bangkok.
India’s Support: Humanitarian Aid
India has sent food packets, hygiene kits, and sleeping bags to help Myanmar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to General Hlaing and assured India’s solidarity with the people of Myanmar during this tough time.
The United Nations has allocated $5 million for life-saving assistance in Myanmar.
Operation Brahma
India’s aid efforts, called #OperationBrahma, involve sending disaster relief materials, humanitarian assistance, and search and rescue teams to affected areas.
The first batch of relief materials was handed over to Yangon’s Chief Minister U Soe Thein by Ambassador Abhay Thakur in Yangon.
