Mumbai Indians Drop Rohit Sharma from Playing XI in IPL 2025
An Unexpected Move by Mumbai Indians
In a surprising turn of events, Mumbai Indians left out their former captain, Rohit Sharma, from the playing XI for their first home game of IPL 2025 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium. The five-time champions have yet to secure a win this season.
Mumbai Indians Shuffle Their Lineup
Making his first appearance at the Wankhede Stadium in the IPL after a disappointing 2024 season, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first. The struggling team made three changes to their lineup:
- Englishman Will Jacks took the place of Afghanistan’s Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
- Vignesh Puthur, who made an impressive debut with three wickets against Chennai Super Kings, replaced Robin Minz.
- Ashwani Kumar, discovered by Mumbai Indians scouts during the Sher-e-Punjab T20 tournament, made his debut in place of Andhra Pradesh pacer Satyanarayana Raju.
Rohit Sharma’s Omission from the Playing XI
Rohit Sharma, the first IPL captain to win five titles and Mumbai Indians’ all-time leading run-scorer with 5466 runs in 214 matches, was not included in the playing XI. He remains on the Impact Player list and may bat during Mumbai Indians’ chase. Rohit Sharma is also one of the few players to score 1000 runs against KKR.
