Assam’s Dhubri: Over 150 Arrested Amid Communal Tensions
Government Acts Swiftly
Over 150 people have been arrested due to communal tensions in Dhubri town, Assam, on June 8. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this on Tuesday.
The tensions began after animal remains were found near a Hindu temple.
Zero Tolerance in Action
“Our zero tolerance approach is working,” Sarma stated on social media. “We have arrested 150 troublemakers. We remain vigilant against communal forces.”
The Bharatiya Janata Party leader also shared plans to establish a permanent Indian Army base. This base will enhance security in this sensitive district.
Latest Updates
On June 14, Sarma reported that 38 more people were arrested for the violence. This adds to the 22 arrested earlier. The day before, he had issued shoot-at-sight orders for nighttime in the area.
The chief minister visited the area for the second time in 10 days on Tuesday, as reported by PTI.
Protests and Ongoing Investigations
Widespread protests erupted in Dhubri on June 8. Many residents blocked a road near the temple. They shouted slogans and burned tires.
Protesters also stopped the police from removing the animal remains. They demanded that the remains stay until those responsible were caught.
Chief Minister’s Statements
During his last visit to Dhubri, Sarma claimed that the animal remains were part of a cow’s head.
“The day after Bakri Eid [on June 8], some people placed a severed cow head in front of a Hanuman temple,” Sarma stated. “Representatives from both communities met. A peace committee meeting was held. The conflict seemed resolved.”
The chief minister claimed that another severed animal head was found the next day, sparking the violence.
He also mentioned a poster found in the town a day before Bakri Eid. The poster showed Dhubri as part of Bangladesh. Sarma alleged that a group was trying to spread tensions in the area.
