Cricket World Honors Ahmedabad Tragedy Victims
Cricket Community Stands Together in Silence
Before the third day of the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s, players from Australia and South Africa, along with match officials, observed a minute of silence. They did this to honor those who lost their lives in the Ahmedabad plane crash.
Both teams and officials also wore black armbands to show their respect for the 241 victims.
ICC Shares Moving Tribute
The International Cricket Council (ICC) posted a video of the tribute. They wrote: “The cricket world, led by South Africa and Australia, stands together in silence to honor those lost in the Ahmedabad tragedy.”
India’s Cricket Teams Also Pay Respects
Before their practice match, India A and the India Test team also took a moment to remember the victims. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared that:
- All players and staff wore black armbands.
- Everyone observed a minute of silence to honor the victims.
Understanding the Ahmedabad Plane Crash
A Boeing 787-8 plane carrying 242 people crashed near Ahmedabad airport at 1:38 PM last Thursday. The flight hit a doctors’ hostel in the Meghani area soon after taking off from Ahmedabad’s airport.
Air India shared that among the 230 passengers:
- 169 were from India
- 53 were from Britain
- 7 were from Portugal
- 1 was from Canada
Sadly, only one person survived this tragic crash.

In the WTC final 2025, Australia is currently at 186/9 in 57 overs. They lead by 260 runs in the second innings. Earlier, South Africa was all out for 138 runs in response to Australia’s first innings score of 212.
