Donald Trump Announces New Tariffs for Several Countries
New Tariff Letters Sent to Multiple Nations
US President Donald Trump has sent out new tariff letters. These letters warn several countries about new duties starting August 1, 2025. Trump had earlier announced plans to send tariff letters to seven more countries. This week, he sent letters to 14 countries. These letters detail the tariff rates that will be imposed.
Countries Impacted by the New Tariffs
The new tariffs announced today will affect the following countries:
- Philippines: 20%
- Brunei: 25%
- Moldova: 25%
- Algeria: 30%
- Libya: 30%
- Iraq: 30%
Trump posted on Truth Social earlier, stating, “We will be releasing a minimum of 7 Countries having to do with trade, tomorrow morning, with an additional number of Countries being released in the afternoon. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
A Change in Strategy
These letters show a shift from Trump’s “Liberation Day” event on April 2. At that event, he displayed poster boards with tariff rates. This caused a brief market downturn and started a 90-day discussion period with initial 10% tariffs. This time, Trump chose to send formal letters instead of using visual presentations. These letters had unusual capitalization, punctuation, and formatting.
Trump explained his new approach, saying, “It’s a better way. It’s a more powerful way. And we send them a letter. You read the letter. I think it was well crafted. And, mostly it’s just a little number in there: You’ll pay 25%, 35%. We have some at 60%, 70%.”
