ITC Ltd and Other Heroes Praised for Green Initiatives

Mumbai: The 12th Earth Care Awards, organized by JSW and The Times of India, took place at Tata Theatre, NCPA, on Wednesday. ITC Ltd received the Green Business Titan award for their eco-friendly projects that have supported the livelihoods of lakhs of people.

A Decade of Applauding Eco-Heroes

  • Over the past 11 years, the awards have acknowledged 87 change-makers from various industries, non-profit organizations, NGOs, and grassroots groups across India.

Inspiring Tales and Optimism for Tomorrow

Sivakumar Sundaram, CEO (Publishing) of The Times Group, shared the journey of an Olive Ridley turtle named ‘03233’ that swam 3,500km from Odisha to Maharashtra, emphasizing the importance of small actions in preserving our planet.

Sangita Jindal, chairperson of the JSW Foundation, expressed optimism for the future, pointing to the high number of entries received this year and the outreach to colleges and students through workshops.

Winners in Different Categories

  • Recykal and Econovus Packaging won the Emerging Business in Climate Action category.
  • The Entrepreneurs Associates, Global Growth Foundation of India (GGFI), and BAIF Development Research Foundation were recognized for Community Led Climate Action.
  • Natasha Zarine of Eco Sattva was honored in the Women Leaders in Climate Action category.
  • Indore Municipal Corporation and Help-O from Sri Lanka received awards in the Urban Centered Climate Action category.

Young Climate Champions Programme

This year’s highlight was the launch of the Young Climate Champions Programme, which aims to empower young environmentalists to become change-makers. Winners included Akil Prasath of RV Bharathidasan University for Biodiversity Conservation and Rohan Kumar of IIT-Bombay for Water Conservation.

Jury Panel and Workshops

The jury panel for the awards was headed by Dr R A Mashelkar, former director general, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and included other notable figures in the field. Nearly 200 workshops were held across 15 states, engaging 20,000 students directly and two lakh peers in some capacity.
