Discover Ferozepur Fort: A Historic Landmark Now Open to Public
Explore Punjab’s Rich Military Legacy
New Delhi: The historic Ferozepur Fort is now open to the public. The Army’s Golden Arrow Division made this possible. For the first time in over 200 years, visitors can explore this landmark. The goal is to promote heritage tourism. It also aims to reconnect locals with the region’s military past.
Why Ferozepur Fort Matters
The fort sits near the Indo-Pakistan border. The Army inaugurated it as part of a larger initiative. This initiative focuses on preserving national heritage. It also encourages responsible tourism in border areas.
Major General R S Manral, the commanding officer, shared his thoughts:
“Reopening Ferozepur Fort reconnects the region with its storied past. It reaffirms its identity as a symbol of valour, resilience, and national pride. This firmly places it on Punjab’s cultural and heritage tourism map.”
He also highlighted the fort’s unique hexagonal structure. Its robust defensive features showcase the strategic ingenuity of the 19th century.
A Journey Through Time
Ferozepur Fort has a rich and layered history. It was once a key outpost in the Sikh empire’s frontier defence network. The British converted it into a garrison in 1839. Later, in 1858, they repurposed it into a major arsenal.
The fort included:
- A powder magazine
- A dry gun cotton store
- Ammunition depots
The site played a critical role during the First War of Independence in 1857. It served as the mother depot for weapons, trained animals, and logistics. At its peak, the fort housed:
- 10,000 bullocks
- 10,000 horses
- Over 150 camels
Its role as an arsenal continued until 1941. The British then relocated ammunition to Kasubegu during World War II.
A Symbol of Pride and Sacrifice
Brigadier Bikram Singh, the Station Commander, emphasized the fort’s importance:
“Ferozepur holds a special place in India’s freedom movement. It produced numerous martyrs and revolutionaries. They bravely resisted colonial rule. This fort and its surroundings have witnessed pivotal historical events. These events continue to symbolize national pride and sacrifice.”
Boosting Tourism and Education
The reopening is expected to boost tourism in Punjab. It will also educate visitors on India’s military past and the independence movement. Plan your visit today and step into a piece of history.
