A Major Step in Boosting Agricultural Exports
A 30-tonne shipment of GI-tagged jaggery from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, has been sent to Bangladesh. Renowned for its superior sugarcane, Muzaffarnagar’s jaggery is highly sought after worldwide.
Understanding GI
GI stands for Geographical Indication, a designation used for agricultural, natural, or manufactured goods that hail from a specific geographical area.
The Role of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and Companies (FPCs)
This export signifies the start of direct jaggery exports from western UP to Bangladesh via FPOs and FPCs. Established in 2023, Brijnandan Agro Farmer Producer Company (FPC) has 545 members and is involved in exporting jaggery, sugarcane products, Basmati rice, and pulses.
APEDA’s Contribution to Agricultural Exports
Backed by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), this marks the third successful instance of an FPO from western UP in agricultural exports. Brijnandan Agro Farmer Producer Company is the only FPO in UP to receive a financial grant of Rs 4 lakh under the state’s agri-export policy.
