Governor Arif Mohammed Khan: Safeguard Champaran Satyagraha’s Historical Significance

Preserving India’s Freedom Movement History

Champaran Satyagraha: A Pivotal Moment

Governor Arif Mohammed Khan underlined the significance of preserving the memories of the Champaran Satyagraha, a crucial event in India’s journey towards independence. Initiated by Mahatma Gandhi on April 15, 1917, the Champaran Satyagraha represented a major turning point in the nation’s struggle for freedom.

Gandhi’s Non-Violent Protest

At a seminar commemorating the 108th anniversary of the Champaran Satyagraha, Governor Khan emphasized that it was among the farmers of Champaran that Gandhi first tried out his non-violent protest. This movement was a response to the oppressive imperialistic regime exploiting farmers for indigo cultivation.

The Impact of Non-Violence

Governor Khan expressed that the seeds of satyagraha sown by Gandhi in Champaran took root and spread across the nation, becoming the most extensive peaceful freedom movement in human history. He highlighted that Gandhi introduced non-violence as a potent means for social transformation.

Champaran: A Sacred Place Reflecting the Freedom Movement

Describing Champaran as a “tirth” (sacred place) and reflection of the freedom movement, Governor Khan emphasized the importance of preserving the memories of the national movement. He noted that India had been under subjugation for an extended period, and other countries that were enslaved for half as long lost their language and culture.

Safeguarding India’s Past

Prior to addressing the seminar, Governor Khan visited the local Charkha park and Satyagraha memorial pillar premises, where he paid his respects with floral tributes. He urged the preservation of India’s history, stating that a nation that forgets its history also loses its geography.

  • The seminar was organized in collaboration by the Mahtma Gandhi foundation and Krishi Vigyan Kendra at the local Gandhi Sabhagar.
  • MP Radha Mohan Singh presided over the function.
