India Reviews Drug Labelling Norms for Better Readability
Government Takes Steps to Improve Medicine Packaging
India’s top drug regulator has formed a special team. This team will improve the labelling on medicine packages. Consumers have complained about hard-to-read expiry dates and shiny packaging that makes reading difficult.
Why the Change?
The Drugs Consultative Committee (DCC) is part of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). They met earlier this month. They decided to create this team to look closely at labelling and packaging issues.
- Consumers have raised concerns about small expiry date letters.
- Shiny medicine strips make it hard to read important information.
What Will the Team Do?
The team will examine these issues in detail. They will also look into creating rules for suppliers of packaging materials and printed foils under the Drugs Rules, 1945.
Additional Improvements
The government is also thinking about adding voice-assisted QR codes and braille cards on medicine strips. These changes aim to:
- Enhance accessibility for all users.
- Improve patient safety.
- Make drug packaging more user-friendly.
A separate team will study the possibility of these digital upgrades.
