Indian Fisherman Dies by Suicide in Karachi Prison
Tragedy in Pakistani Prison
An Indian fisherman, Gaurav Ram Anand, took his own life in a Karachi prison on Tuesday, as reported by Dawn.
Circumstances of the Incident
According to Jail Superintendent Arshad Husain, all Indian prisoners, including Anand, were housed in the same barracks. Anand went to the washroom on Tuesday night and ended his life.
Depression and Delayed Release
Sindh Inspector General of Prison Police Qazi Nazeer Ahmed stated that the 52-year-old fisherman appeared to be suffering from severe depression due to delays in his release from prison.
- Anand’s sentence was completed
- The process from the Indian side for his release was not finalized
Fellow prisoners reported that Anand’s behavior did not indicate he would commit suicide, but he was depressed.
Repatriation of the Body
Anand’s body has been handed over to the Edhi Foundation and will remain in their custody until the legal formalities for its repatriation are completed.
Detention of Fishermen
Fishermen from India and Pakistan are frequently detained by each other’s security forces for allegedly entering their territorial waters by accident.
Poorly Marked Maritime Boundary
The maritime boundary in the Arabian Sea is poorly marked at several points, and many boats lack the necessary technology to determine their exact location, resulting in unintentional border crossings.
Environmental Factors
Higher pollution and dwindling fish supplies drive more Indian fishermen towards Pakistani waters than the other way around.
