Indian Railways Raises Passenger Train Fares

Indian Railways fares

Indian Railways has raised fares for passenger trains. This is the first hike in many years. The new fares will take effect on July 1, 2025.

What You Need to Know About the Fare Hike

  • Non-AC Mail/Express trains: 1 paise increase per kilometre
  • AC classes: 2 paise increase per kilometre

New Rules for Tatkal Booking

Aadhaar Authentication Now Required

Indian Railways has introduced a significant change. Starting July 1, 2025, you must have Aadhaar authentication to book Tatkal train tickets. This new rule ensures that the Tatkal Scheme benefits reach the general public.

Important Points of the New Rule

  • From July 1, 2025, only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book Tatkal tickets through the IRCTC website or app.
  • From July 15, 2025, an additional Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will be required for booking Tatkal tickets.

New Restrictions for Booking Agents

The new guidelines also limit Tatkal ticket reservations for authorised booking agents. These agents cannot book first-day Tatkal tickets within the first half-hour window.

Timings for the Restrictions

  • AC class bookings: 10:00 am to 10:30 am
  • Non-AC class bookings: 11:00 am to 11:30 am

System Changes Underway

The railway ministry has asked the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and IRCTC to make necessary system changes. These changes will be shared with all zonal railway divisions. The aim is to simplify the Tatkal reservation process for travellers.
