India’s Military Response: Key Lessons from Operation Sindoor

Military Operation

Understanding the Mistakes

General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, recently talked to Bloomberg. He admitted that the Indian Air Force lost some aircraft during Operation Sindoor. But he stressed that we should focus on why these losses happened, not just how many jets were lost.

Chauhan said, “Why they were down, what mistakes were made – that is important. Numbers are not important.”

Learning and Adapting

India quickly found and fixed the tactical mistakes. This allowed them to start operations again. Chauhan mentioned that they fixed the issues and launched successful strikes once more.

Addressing Pakistan’s Claims

Chauhan dismissed Pakistan’s claims of shooting down six Indian Air Force fighter jets. He called these claims “absolutely incorrect.” It’s important to note that these claims by Islamabad have not been independently verified.

Operation Sindoor: What Happened and How India Responded

Chauhan spoke at the Shangri-La Dialogue, an international security event in Singapore. He told Reuters that India faced losses early in the operation. However, he stressed that the focus should be on learning from these losses and improving tactics.

He explained that they changed their tactics and carried out successful strikes on May 7th, 8th, and 10th. These strikes targeted air bases deep inside Pakistan and were done with precision.

Military Successes

The Indian Air Force flew various types of aircraft with different weapons on May 10th. Air Marshal AK Bharti, in a press conference, pointed out that losses are a part of combat. He also confirmed that all Indian pilots returned home safely.

Bharti emphasized that the main question should be whether the military achieved its goals. He confirmed that they successfully destroyed terrorist camps. He also mentioned that the Indian military had shot down a few Pakistani planes, although he did not specify the number.

Rising Tensions and Finding Peace

Tensions between India and Pakistan rose on May 7th when the Indian military launched Operation Sindoor. This operation targeted terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. It was a response to a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people on April 22nd.

The Pakistan Army retaliated by shelling Indian villages along the Line of Control. This resulted in the deaths of at least 22 Indian civilians and seven defense personnel.

On May 10th, India and Pakistan agreed to stop firing. This ceasefire has largely held, bringing temporary peace to the region.
