Jasper Philipsen Leaves Tour de France After Bad Crash

Jasper Philipsen had to leave the 2025 Tour de France after a bad crash in stage 3. This happened during an intermediate sprint. It ended a great start for Philipsen and his Alpecin-Deceuninck team.

What Happened During the Crash

Stage 3 of the 2025 Tour de France was a 178.3 km route from Valenciennes to Dunkirk. During this stage, disaster struck Jasper Philipsen. It happened during an intermediate sprint with about 60 km left.

The Crash Details

Philipsen was going for points when Bryan Coquard of Cofidis hit Laurenz Rex of Intermarche-Wanty. This made Coquard bump into Philipsen’s path, leaving Philipsen with no room to move.

Philipsen’s Injuries and Treatment

Philipsen was going nearly 60 kph when he crashed hard. He landed on his right shoulder and slid across the road. His jersey was torn, and he had visible injuries. These included bloody scrapes and a suspected broken collarbone.

Race doctors quickly helped Philipsen. They put his right arm in a sling. Even though he tried to continue, his injuries were too severe. He couldn’t go on.

The Alpecin-Deceuninck team shared the news on social media. They said, “Joy and sorrow so close together. We will update on his medical condition soon. We are all with you, Jasper!”

Impact on Alpecin-Deceuninck

Philipsen’s sudden exit was a big blow for Alpecin-Deceuninck. The team had done really well in the first days of the Tour.

  • Philipsen, a 27-year-old Belgian sprinter, won stage 1 in Lille. He got the yellow jersey for the first time in his career.
  • He also became the leader in the points classification with the green jersey.
  • On stage 2, his teammate Mathieu van der Poel won in Boulogne-sur-Mer and took the yellow jersey. It was a dream weekend for the team.

Philipsen’s 10th career Tour stage win had made him a top contender for the green jersey. He had won this title in 2023. The crash not only ended Philipsen’s Tour but also changed the team’s strategy.

What Happened After the Crash

After the crash, Jonathan Milan of Lidl-Trek took the most points in the intermediate sprint. The group slowed down after the incident. Other riders, including one from Movistar, narrowly avoided more collisions.

Bryan Coquard and Laurenz Rex stayed upright. Coquard unclipped to avoid falling. But tensions rose after the crash. One of Philipsen’s teammates angrily confronted Coquard. There was even a heated exchange with physical contact.

Philipsen’s exit gave the virtual green jersey to Biniam Girmay of Intermarche-Wanty. Girmay was last year’s points classification winner.

With a sprint finish expected at the end of stage 3, won by Tim Merlier, the points race was set to get even tighter. Girmay’s new lead adds more excitement to the sprinters’ battle in the coming stages.
