Gig Workers Welfare Bill

The Jharkhand state cabinet approved a new bill on Wednesday. This bill is called The Jharkhand Platform Based Gig Workers (Registration and Welfare) Bill of 2025. They will present it in the next state assembly session.

Prashant Kumar, the state finance secretary, spoke to the media about the bill. The labor employment and training department proposed it. Kumar said, “This bill will help gig workers in the state. These workers are part of various online platforms. The bill will streamline their work and ensure their welfare.”

  • Registration and management of gig workers’ data
  • Setting up a special welfare fund for gig workers

Other Approvals by the Cabinet

The cabinet approved 11 other proposals during the meeting. Here are some key decisions:

New Staff Positions in Engineering Colleges

The cabinet approved new teaching and non-teaching staff positions. These positions are for the newly established government engineering colleges in Bokaro and Godda. They will follow AICTE norms and regulations.

  • 85 teaching positions for each college
  • 125 non-teaching positions for each college
  • Annual expense of Rs 41.87 crore

Amendment to Municipal Contractor Registration Rules

The cabinet approved the formation of the Jharkhand Municipal Contractor Registration (Amendment) Rules, 2025. This amendment makes GST registration mandatory in the state. It is required for entities seeking work orders or contracts from the state urban development department.

Road Improvement Project

The cabinet gave administrative approval for the transfer, widening, strengthening, and reconstruction of the Pakur-Barharwa main road. The estimated budget for this project is around Rs 40.39 crore.

Transfer of Medical Staff

The cabinet approved the transfer of all posts of doctors and medical staff at jails across the state. These posts will move from the home department to the health department. This change aims to better manage resources.

Reinstatement of Teachers

The cabinet approved a proposal to reinstate 25 teachers. A CBI investigation had declared their appointments illegal. However, the Supreme Court and Jharkhand High Court later allowed their appointments. These teachers will now receive their due benefits and pensions.
