Karnataka Cricket Officials Step Down After Bengaluru Tragedy
Two top officials from the Karnataka State Cricket Association have stepped down. They took this step after a tragic event outside Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium. A stampede caused the death of 11 people and injured more than 50.
Top Officials Resign
On Friday, the secretary, A Shankar, and treasurer ES Jairam, decided to resign. They felt it was the right thing to do after the sad event. Even though they had limited roles, they took moral responsibility.
The Tragic Stampede
The stampede took place on Wednesday at Gate Number 3 of the stadium. Fans had come together to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s win in the Indian Premier League. They were also there to welcome the team back.
Legal Updates
Shankar and Jairam resigned after the Karnataka High Court gave temporary protection from arrest to senior officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. This protection was given if they agreed to cooperate with the police.
The cricket association and the Royal Challengers Bangalore cricket team had gone to the High Court. They wanted the case against them to be dropped.
Government’s Response
On Thursday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah suspended Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda and several other police officers.
On Friday, the Karnataka Police arrested four people. These included Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and three others from the event management firm DNA Entertainment Networks.
Inquiries Launched
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also announced a judicial investigation into the stampede. This inquiry will be led by retired Karnataka High Court judge Justice Michael D’Cunha. It will happen at the same time as the earlier investigation assigned to Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner Dayananda K Jagadeesha.
