Increasing Tensions

Karnataka’s Congress party is going through a difficult period. A growing dispute between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar is causing concern. People are worried about the government’s stability and the party’s future.

Unsettled Leadership Transition

The main problem is an unresolved leadership transition. When Congress formed the government in May 2023, there was an informal agreement. Siddaramaiah would serve as CM for two and a half years. Then, Shivakumar would take over. This transition should occur in November.

However, there has been no official announcement from party leaders. There are also no signs of preparation for this change. This lack of action is making the issue more contentious.

Key Leaders

Both leaders play crucial roles in Karnataka’s Congress party:

  • Siddaramaiah has strong support from backward classes, minorities, and Dalits. He also possesses extensive administrative experience.
  • Shivakumar excels at fundraising and maintains strong control over the organization.

Siddaramaiah shows no signs of stepping down. Instead, he is strengthening his position. He aims to serve a full term. This situation is causing dissatisfaction among Shivakumar’s supporters.

Recent Confrontation

The latest conflict involved transferring engineers from the water resources department. Shivakumar supervises this department. He chose to record his displeasure in writing. This marks a significant change.

“Recording his displeasure in writing sends a message to the party,” said a senior Congress leader. “He won’t remain passive as the CM strengthens his grip.”

Shivakumar views these reassignments as an attempt to undermine his authority. The timing of this conflict is also significant.

Siddaramaiah’s Priorities

“Siddaramaiah believes these developments are part of a larger plan to push him out. His focus now is to demonstrate strong leadership. He wants to show that he can withstand political and personal attacks,” said an MLA from Bengaluru.
