Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made a significant breakthrough. They arrested Arun Dey, a key suspect in the 2021 murder of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar. The arrest happened in North 24 Parganas. Dey is the eighth person arrested in this case.

Who is Arun Dey?

Arun Dey, from Narkeldanga, had been hiding for four years. He is thought to be an aide of a senior Trinamool leader. Dey was the first person named in the murder report. The CBI says he kept moving and avoided contact with people he knew.

Latest Updates

This arrest follows the capture of another key suspect, Amit Das. Das was working as a food delivery agent in the Kestopur-Newtown area. About six more suspects are still free. All of them have non-bailable arrest warrants. The police want to question Dey to help find the other suspects.

Case Details

A CBI spokesperson in Delhi shared some key points:

  • Dey never helped with the investigation after the CBI took over the case.
  • The CBI filed charges in 2021 against 20 people, including Dey.

What Happened in 2021?

Abhijit Sarkar was killed on May 2, 2021. This was after the Bengal state assembly election results were announced. A mob attacked a BJP party office on Sitalatalla Lane in Narkeldanga. Sarkar was there, watching the election results.

The 30-year-old managed to escape to his home. But he was later dragged out and killed. The case was given to the CBI after Sarkar’s family was unhappy with the initial investigation.
