Livestock Market

Introduction

The Maharashtra Goseva Ayog has asked livestock markets to close. This is just before the Muslim festival Bakri Eid on June 7. The markets will stay closed from June 3 to June 8.

About Bakri Eid

Bakri Eid is also called Eid-al-Adha. It is an important Muslim festival. The festival celebrates the spirit of sacrifice. Traditionally, people slaughter goats during this time.

The Circular

The Maharashtra Goseva Ayog issued a circular on May 27. It said no livestock markets should operate from June 3 to June 8. The goal is to prevent the illegal slaughter of bovines. The circular mentioned the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act. This act bans the slaughter of bovine animals.

Why the Circular Was Issued

Shekhar Mundada is the chairperson of the Maharashtra Goseva Ayog. He said the circular aims to reduce cow slaughter. He noted that many animal transactions happen before Eid. Some of these are for slaughter. The goal is to stop these transactions.

Impact of the Circular

The halt on animal sales is only for one week. Mundada said the circular is just advice. However, the circular has caused some controversy. Many wonder why all animal sales must stop. This includes lambs and sheep, which are not banned.

Reactions to the Circular

Farooq Ahmad is the state vice president of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi. He said the state should ensure cow slaughter does not happen. But he questioned why the entire market must shut down.

Economic Impact

Ahmad pointed out that the trade of non-banned animals will also stop. This includes goats, buffaloes, and sheep. As a result, daily wage income for many will stop. This affects farmers, porters, brokers, drivers, and laborers.

Authority of the Circular

Ahmad also said the Maharashtra Goseva Ayog can only recommend. He believes issuing direct orders to market committees is beyond its authority.
