Mamata Banerjee Criticizes Centre Over Pahalgam Attack
West Bengal CM Questions Security Lapse
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has spoken out. She criticized the Union government for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Banerjee called the attack a result of the Centre’s “callousness.” She also accused the BJP of using the bravery of the armed forces for political gain.
Key Points from Banerjee’s Speech
- Banerjee asked why security forces were absent during the attack.
- She praised the armed forces for their bravery in Operation Sindoor.
- Banerjee suggested that India could have taken control of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Call for Political Accountability
Banerjee demanded political accountability. She stated, “The BJP government should step down. It has failed to provide security to the people of this country.”
Comments on International Diplomacy
Banerjee also shared her thoughts on India’s diplomatic stance. She said, “I am not sure if our international diplomacy is effective. Pakistan received loans from the IMF instead of being isolated globally.”
Background on Operation Sindoor
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7. This operation destroyed nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. It was a response to a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22. That attack killed 26 people, mostly tourists.
Aftermath and Escalation
After India’s strike, Pakistan retaliated. They conducted shelling across the Line of Control and in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan also attempted drone attacks along the border.
Following Pakistan’s actions, India escalated its response. India targeted and destroyed key Pakistani military and air infrastructure. This included the Nur Khan Airbase in Rawalpindi and the Rahim Yar Khan airbase. Both countries agreed to end hostilities on May 10.
