Manish Malhotra’s One-Day Sherwani for Michael Jackson
A Memorable Milestone in Fashion Design
Renowned fashion designer Manish Malhotra recently shared an unforgettable memory from his career. He designed a contemporary sherwani for the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, in just a day!
The Unforgettable Request
Kamal Dhandona and the late S.P. Hinduja, sponsors of the 1998 Bollywood Awards in New York, asked Malhotra to create an outfit for Michael Jackson. Excited and challenged, Malhotra accepted the task.
Blending Tradition and Modernity
Malhotra aimed to merge global influences with the traditional sherwani cut. He designed a shorter sherwani with trousers and a shawl/stole made from textured handloom, woven silk, and brocade borders.
- Sleek short sherwani
- Tailored trousers
- Elegant draped shawl
A Grateful Michael Jackson
In a video, Michael Jackson can be seen thanking Malhotra for the outfit, saying, “Manish, thank you for your wonderful costume. I appreciate it very much.”
A Career Defining Moment
For Malhotra, this collaboration with the music icon remains a proud moment in his career. Dressing Jackson, known for his unique style, was a significant honor and a remarkable challenge.
At the same event, Malhotra won the Best Costume Award for ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,’ further solidifying his status as a Bollywood fashion trailblazer. His influence has only grown since then, with his label adorning Bollywood’s biggest stars and making waves on international red carpets, including his recent debut at the 2024 Golden Globes with Guneet Monga.
