Inter Miami and Messi Kick Off Club World Cup with a Draw
Inter Miami and Al Ahly Play to a Goalless Tie
Lionel Messi and Inter Miami began their Club World Cup journey with a goalless draw against Egypt’s Al Ahly on Saturday night.
A Challenging First Half
More than 60,000 fans filled Hard Rock Stadium. They saw Miami withstand a strong first-half push by Al Ahly, the 12-time African champions. Al Ahly nearly took the lead from a penalty, but goalkeeper Oscar Ustari saved Trezeguet’s shot.
Miami’s Second Half Opportunities
Miami found better chances in the second half. Messi nearly scored with a free kick that hit the post. He also struck the bar with a long-range shot in added time.
Ustari’s Key Saves
Miami depended on veteran goalkeeper Ustari to keep the game level in the first half. The 38-year-old made several saves as Al Ahly controlled the game. His best moment was a double save just before halftime. He first blocked Trezeguet’s penalty and then quickly got up to save the rebound.
What’s Next
The draw means both teams face tougher matches ahead in Group A. They will play against Brazilian powerhouse Palmeiras and Porto from Portugal. The top two teams will move on to the round of 16.
Miami’s Stronger Second Half
Miami can be encouraged by their second-half performance. After being dominated in the first half, they created better chances after the break. Messi’s free kick and long-range shot both hit the woodwork.
