On Saturday, the Ministry of Home Affairs organized a meeting in New Delhi with representatives from Meitei and Kuki-Zo organizations to address the ethnic conflict that has plagued Manipur for nearly two years. This marked the first formal gathering between the two sides since the outbreak of violence in May 2023.
Draft Agreement Proposed for Review
At the meeting, officials presented a draft agreement or joint resolution for both parties to consider. The draft included appeals for non-violence, cooperation in recovering arms, and allowing free traffic movement on highways. Additionally, it suggested measures to help displaced individuals return home, with the government providing logistical and security support.
All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation Approves Draft Points
Pheiroijam Nando Luwang, president of the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation, confirmed that his organization agreed to the points outlined by the officials. However, the Kuki-Zo side was reluctant to provide their consent.
Kuki-Zo Council Chairperson Praises ‘Historic’ Meeting
Henlianthang Thanglet, chairperson of the Kuki-Zo Council, described the meeting as ‘very historic’ and emphasized that the Kuki-Zo groups have been advocating for a separate administration as a prerequisite for peace talks. He expressed that dialogue for a ‘lasting solution’ must commence.
Kuki-Zo and Zomi Leaders View Meeting as Important Milestone
Leaders from the Kuki-Zo and Zomi tribes consider the Home Ministry’s efforts in organizing the meeting as a significant milestone in the search for a resolution to the nearly two-year conflict.
Ministry Previously Met with Manipur MLAs in October
In October, the ministry held a meeting with Meitei, Kuki-Zo, and Naga MLAs from Manipur. However, Kuki-Zo MLAs stated that they only met with ministry officials separately and did not engage in talks with legislators from other communities.
