Mitchell Owen’s IPL Debut with Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings welcomed Mitchell Owen, a powerful batsman from Australia, to their team. He made his Indian Premier League debut against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday.

A Debut to Forget

Unfortunately, Owen’s debut was not memorable. The 23-year-old lasted only two deliveries. Batting at number 3, he was caught behind by wicketkeeper Sanju Samson off Kwena Maphaka’s bowling. Owen scored 0 off 2 balls, attempting a big six.

The Dismissal

The Tasmanian batsman tried to hit a wide ball outside off stump to the leg side. Instead, he sliced the ball high into the air. Captain Samson, returning from injury and wearing the keeping gloves, safely caught the ball.

Replacing Glenn Maxwell

PBKS signed Owen as an injury replacement for fellow Australian Glenn Maxwell. Maxwell is back home after suffering a fractured finger on his right hand.

Who is Mitchell Owen?

The 23-year-old top-order batsman from Tasmania made a name for himself in the latest season (2024/25) of the Big Bash League in Australia.

BBL Performance

  • In the BBL final, Owen scored 108 from 42 balls.
  • This helped Hurricanes chase down Sydney Thunder’s target of 183 with 7 wickets and 35 balls to spare.
  • Owen won the Man of the Match award in the final.
  • He ended the BBL 2024/25 season with 452 runs from 11 innings.
  • His average was 45.20, and his strike rate was 203.60.

Mitchell Owen in IPL 2025

Before joining PBKS, Owen was playing in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for Peshawar Zalmi.

Early Arrival in IPL

Originally, Owen was supposed to join the PBKS squad only for the IPL 2025 playoffs. However, due to the military conflict between India and Pakistan, he arrived earlier.

The PSL 10 was supposed to end with the final on May 18. But the league was suspended because of the conflict. This allowed PBKS to call Owen to India earlier than planned.

Impact on Punjab Kings

Although Owen lasted only two balls on his debut, his presence in the Punjab side’s batting lineup is a major boost. They are aiming for a playoff spot.

Before the RR game, PBKS were third in the IPL 2025 standings with 15 points from 11 matches.
