Patna University to Reopen Boys’ Hostels After a Year
Old Boarders Get Priority in First Phase of Hostel Allotment
Vice-Chancellor Leads Meeting to Make Decision
Patna University (PU) has decided to reopen its boys’ hostels after nearly a year. This decision was made during a meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Ajay Kumar Singh. The meeting included Anil Kumar, PU Dean of Students’ Welfare, Proctor Manoj Kumar, Registrar Shalini, and superintendents of all postgraduate hostels.
First Phase of Hostel Allotment for Former Boarders
In the initial phase, hostels will be allocated to boys who previously occupied rooms before being asked to vacate by the university administration. This followed the murder of B N College student Harsh Raj in May 2024. Old boarders can apply for hostel allotment between April 21 and 26.
- Old boarders must submit new applications and pay the necessary fee.
- The process will be completed within a week.
Second Phase of Hostel Allotment for New Students
Fresh allotment will only be made after admissions for the 2025-26 academic session are completed. Rooms in Faraday House of Patna Science College, and Jackson and Minto hostels of Patna College will not be allotted to students as they are being repaired.
Only Genuine Students Allowed in University Hostels
Only genuine students of the university will be permitted to occupy rooms in the university hostels.
Hostels Remained Empty After Murder of Harsh Raj
After the murder of Raj on Patna Law College campus in May last year, the then governor-cum-chancellor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, requested the district administration and university authorities to vacate all the boys’ hostels due to worsening law and order and frequent clashes among boarders.
The boarders of all the hostels were forced to find accommodation in private lodges of the city. Even new students were not given hostel accommodation when the new academic session of PU began last year.
PU Administration Requested Permission to Allocate Hostels
The PU administration wrote to the office of the chancellor several times for permission to allocate hostels to needy students, but the latter did not allow the university to do so. He only permitted the university administration to provide hostel accommodation to girls.
26 Hostels Under Patna University
There are 26 hostels under Patna University, 20 for boys and the rest for girls. The hostels can accommodate 1,400 boys and 998 girls.
