Assam Arrests

Seven Arrested in Lakhimpur District

Police in Assam’s Lakhimpur district have arrested seven individuals. This follows the discovery of three cattle skulls near a local prayer hall. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the arrests on Wednesday.

Who Was Arrested?

The arrested individuals are:

  • Monsur Ali, aged 60
  • Mohammad Rejjak Ali, aged 29
  • Saha Ali, aged 48
  • Diluar Hussain, aged 25
  • Dildar Hussain, aged 30
  • Abu Kalam Ali, aged 33

During a search at Monsur Ali’s home, police found and seized three additional cattle skulls. The Chief Minister shared this information in a social media post.

What’s Next?

An investigation is currently underway. Technical analysis is also being conducted, as stated by Sarma.

Previous Arrests in Dhubri

This incident comes after recent events in Dhubri town. On June 8, communal tensions flared up. Over the course of a week, police arrested at least 60 people.

What Sparked the Tensions?

The tensions began after animal remains were found near a Hindu temple. Sarma claimed these remains were part of a cow’s head.

Government’s Response

On June 13, the state government issued nighttime shoot-at-sight orders in Dhubri to control the situation. However, the next day, another severed animal head was found near the temple, sparking further violence.

Those arrested in connection with the Dhubri incident face non-bailable offenses.

Arrests in Goalpara

On June 15, Chief Minister Biswa announced more arrests. The Assam Police arrested five individuals accused of throwing beef near a temple in Goalpara.
