Sambhal Violence Case: Posters of Accused to be Displayed Across UP
Posters of Accused to be Displayed in Other Districts
Uttar Pradesh will soon display posters of the accused in the Sambhal violence case. This move aims to help identify and report these individuals.
Properties to be Attached
Authorities will also seize the properties of the accused. Sambhal Superintendent of Police, Krishan Kumar, announced this on Friday. He added that raids are ongoing to arrest these individuals.
Previous Actions Taken
In February, police put up posters with photos of 74 suspects. These posters were displayed in various spots around Sambhal. The goal was to help residents identify and report the accused.
Background of the Violence
Violence erupted in Sambhal on November 24. A group of Muslims objected to a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Chandausi town. A trial court had ordered this survey. The suit claimed that the mosque was built in 1526 by Mughal ruler Babar on the site of an old temple.
Five people were killed during the violence.
Government’s Response
In December, the district administration announced that posters of the accused would be displayed on public walls. The Uttar Pradesh government also stated that those involved in the violence would have to pay for the damage to public property.
Legal Actions and Arrests
Police have registered eight FIRs against 150 named individuals and 2,500 unidentified people. Several arrests have been made for allegedly throwing stones at the police during the violence.
Historical Context
In 2020, the Uttar Pradesh government put up posters of individuals involved in vandalism during protests against the Citizen Amendment Act. However, the Allahabad High Court later ordered these posters to be taken down.
