Tambaram Needs ₹1,241 Crore for Underground Sewage Project
Chennai: It’s been eight months since Madambakkam lake was found polluted with waste. Tambaram corporation has asked the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for ₹1,241.32 crore from the Tamil Nadu government. This money is needed to start building underground sewage lines for Zone 5 colonies.
The Project and Its Delays
The project is still waiting for approval. Even if the funds are approved, it will take at least two more years to finish. This delay has upset residents who still use the polluted lake for drinking water.
NGT’s Directives
In June, the NGT asked why there were no temporary solutions. The corporation was told to file a report explaining how sewage entering the lake has been stopped. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), which found high levels of pollution in the lake in 2024, was ordered to check all nearby buildings. They must also stop any new pollution.
Private Project Near the Lake
The NGT also wanted details on a private project near the lake. The state water resources department suggested a drain around the lake with a 3-meter gap. This will let the lake’s runoff water pass through safely. The developer was told to submit a detailed drainage map showing how water will be diverted back into the lake.
Pending Reports and Updates
While Tambaram corporation mentioned a pending detailed project report, the NGT noted that no updates were received on earlier directions. These include a January 2025 order to submit building permits and environmental clearance details for the same site. The collector was also asked to check if Madambakkam lake is in the National Wetland Atlas. This is important to decide protection under wetland rules.
Residents’ Concerns
With no water treatment plant and residents still depending on overhead tank chlorination, the NGT has warned of stricter action if there are more delays. The matter has been set for a final hearing on July 3.
Resident Activist’s Proposal
Dayanand Krishnan, a resident-activist from Tambaram, suggested an alternative. Instead of waiting for the ₹1,241 crore, the government should approve the ₹14.5 crore proposal. This proposal is for stopping and diverting sewage around Madambakkam lake through channels. It also includes a 3.5 MLD sewage treatment plant, a plan submitted by Tambaram corporation nearly seven months ago.
Prioritizing Water Treatment
Krishnan also stressed the need to prioritize the ₹4.6 crore proposal for a water treatment plant. This would ensure cleaner water for the residents who are currently at risk due to the contaminated lake.
