Three Mid-Air Scares: Flyers on Edge in the Last 24 Hours

Three mid-air scares

New Delhi faced three in-flight emergencies within a single day. These incidents involved planes from the UK, Germany, and India. Flyers are understandably nervous, especially after the tragic Air India Flight AI 171 crash. That accident took 279 lives, including 241 passengers.

Here’s what happened:

  • A British fighter jet landed urgently in Kerala due to low fuel.
  • A bomb threat forced a Lufthansa flight heading to Hyderabad to return to Frankfurt.
  • An Air India flight from Hong Kong to Delhi turned back because of a suspected technical problem.

Thankfully, no one was hurt in these incidents. However, the quick succession of mid-air scares has raised concerns. People are worried about aviation safety and how prepared we are operationally. These concerns are growing with more air traffic and rising geopolitical tensions.

Delhi-Bound Air India Flight Returns to Hong Kong

An Air India flight from Hong Kong to Delhi faced a mid-air scare. The pilots suspected a technical issue. To be safe, the Boeing 787, with over 200 passengers, returned to Hong Kong soon after takeoff.

Air India shared: “Flight AI315 from Hong Kong to Delhi on June 16, 2025, returned due to a technical issue. The flight landed safely and is being checked thoroughly. We’re arranging another flight for the passengers as soon as possible.”

They also said, “We’re helping all passengers on the ground. We want to reduce the trouble caused by this unexpected event.”

Lufthansa Flight Returns to Germany After Bomb Threat

In another serious incident, a Lufthansa flight to Hyderabad from Frankfurt had to turn back. This happened because of a bomb threat.

An official told ANI news agency: “The flight returned because of a bomb threat. This threat came when the plane was still outside Indian airspace.”

Lufthansa flight LH752 left Frankfurt at about 2:14 PM local time (5:44 PM IST) on Sunday. It was supposed to reach Hyderabad early Monday. But flight tracking showed it changed course a few hours into the trip.

All passengers were safely taken off the plane and checked. Authorities are now looking into the source of the threat, which caused many hours of disruption.

British Fighter Jet Makes Emergency Landing in Kerala

A British F-35 fighter landed urgently in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. The reason given was “low fuel.”

The Air Traffic Control (ATC) was alerted around 9:20 PM. The airport quickly set up emergency measures. The plane landed safely at about 9:28 PM. It stayed at the Kerala airport for refueling.
