Water body near Jamshedpur

Two Lives Lost in Separate Incidents

Jamshedpur faced two sad drowning incidents in the Kolhan region within the past day. These events show we need safety steps at water spots.

First Incident: Student Drowns at Chandil Dam

Md Sahil, a 20-year-old student, drowned at Chandil Dam on Sunday. He was with eight friends. The accident happened around 5:30 PM when Sahil slipped and fell into the water.

Sahil’s friends told the police about the incident at night. Police, locals, and swimmers searched for Sahil. Sadly, they found his body on Monday morning.

Second Incident: Man Drowns in Telco Area Pond

In another sad event, Suraj Purty, a 48-year-old man from Birsanagar, drowned in a pond in the Telco area. Purty was at the pond with his wife and child on Sunday. He slipped and fell into deep waters.

Purty’s wife and child shouted for help, but no one was around. Later, locals, swimmers, and police recovered Purty’s body from the pond.

Lack of Safety Measures

In both incidents, there were no expert swimmers at the site. A recent report showed that river spots and water bodies in and around Jamshedpur lack:

  • CCTV camera surveillance
  • Signboards warning about drowning dangers

Expert Advice and Call for Action

Mohan Singh, an expert swimmer and former National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) member, advised:

  • People who don’t know how to swim should never enter water bodies or rivers.
  • It’s as dangerous as driving a vehicle without a license.

Singh also stressed the need for:

  • Trained divers
  • Rescue teams in the Kolhan region

He said the administration must train rescuers to save lives in drowning incidents.

Unsafe Water Bodies

Many water bodies near Jamshedpur attract visitors all year. But the lack of safety measures makes these places dangerous.

Authorities must take action to ensure visitor safety. Steps like installing CCTV cameras, placing warning signs, and having trained lifeguards can reduce tragic incidents.
