Water Detox Trend: Doctors Urge Caution Amid Rising Water Intoxication Cases
Hyderabad Doctors Warn of Dangers from Overhydration
Doctors in Hyderabad are cautioning people about the risks of consuming too much water too quickly, particularly during summer. Although rare, instances of water intoxication or hyponatremia, characterized by critically low sodium levels in the blood, are increasing.
Recent Incidents of Water Intoxication
- A 75-year-old man from Medchal was hospitalized in the ICU after experiencing water toxicity. He reported feeling tired and weak, and his sodium levels were dangerously low due to excessive water intake.
- A 40-year-old woman from Kondapur was taken to the emergency room after drinking four liters of water in the morning for detoxification. She complained of a headache, nausea, and experienced a seizure and lost consciousness.
Both patients survived, but a 35-year-old mother of two from the US lost her life in August 2023 due to water intoxication after drinking two liters of water within 20 minutes. Martial artist Bruce Lee also died in 1973 from high water content and kidney dysfunction.
The Risks of Overhydration
When large amounts of water enter our bodies, it dilutes the blood and decreases sodium levels, an essential mineral. This can lead to lethargy, headaches, and brain swelling. To prevent water intoxicity, it’s recommended to spread water consumption throughout the day.
Dr. Kumar, a senior neurologist at Apollo Hospital, advises against following the water detoxification trend and significantly increasing water intake. Dr. Raju, head of the nephrology department at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, stresses the importance of using drinking water wisely for proper brain function.
Balanced Water Intake is Crucial
The brain is sensitive to water levels. If we don’t drink enough water, it shrinks; if we drink too much, it swells. Therefore, maintaining a balanced water intake is crucial, especially for the elderly who are more susceptible to kidney and other health issues.
In summary, while staying hydrated is important, especially during summer, it’s essential to do so in moderation and avoid excessive water consumption. Always pay attention to your body and consult a doctor if you experience any adverse symptoms.
