Xander Schauffele Aims to Replicate Success at PGA Championship
Defending Champion Focuses on Winning Mindset
Xander Schauffele won his first major at the PGA Championship last year. Now, he’s back to defend his title.
Winning Mindset
Schauffele believes in staying focused. “When you’re in the moment, you don’t nitpick,” he said. “You’re on a mission to win. It’s a whatever-it-takes mentality.”
This mindset helped him win at Valhalla Golf Club. He’s ready to bring the same focus to this year’s tournament.
Proving Himself Again
Schauffele has already won two majors. Last year, he also won the 152nd Open Championship. But he still feels he has more to prove.
“I feel like I’ve done it before, but I’m still trying to prove myself,” he said. “I don’t feel too different as a whole.”
Overcoming Challenges
Schauffele faced a rib injury this winter. But he’s back on track. “I’m moving in the right direction with my game,” he said.
He’s familiar with Quail Hollow, where he first played the PGA Championship in 2017. Since then, he’s had five top-20 finishes, including last year’s win.
Weather and Course Conditions
This week’s tournament has already seen weather challenges. Practice rounds were suspended due to a storm.
“It’s been an interesting week with the weather,” Schauffele said. “Delays and rain can fool you on this property. The greens are firm despite the rain.”
All golfers will need to adjust to changing course conditions. Schauffele is ready for the challenge.
